Jena is our "under the bed" cat, much like Harry Potter living under the stairs.

She is one of those feral cats who wants absolutely nothing to do with people. You can't pet her, and most days you can barely look at her before she vanishes. Yet if you quietly open one eye in the middle of the night, there's a good chance you'll find her sleeping on the bed beside you. Open a can of food from two rooms away, and suddenly Jena appears in the bedroom doorway as if by magic, fully expecting room service. Of course, the moment you walk toward her, she disappears like a shadow at high noon. Somehow, the food disappears too.

Jena's path to APFH began with heartbreak. She lived in an industrial park and raised a litter of five kittens beneath a truck. When employees returned to work one Monday morning, all five kittens had been killed. An employee who witnessed what had happened feared the same fate would befall Jena's next family.

When Jena had another litter, he called APFH for help.

Using a drop trap, we captured Jena and her four kittens over the course of three hours. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made. Today, Jena and her daughter Molly remain lifelong residents of the sanctuary. Two of her sons were adopted by the kind gentleman and his wife who asked us to help, while the third found a home with a young man living on his own for the first time and hoping for a feline companion. His mother even flew all the way from Puerto Rico to meet her new "grandcat." I think that boy is going to have a very good life.

Like many of our feral residents, Jena may never be a cat who wants to be held or cuddled. But love is not measured by how close a cat lets you get. It is measured by making sure they are safe, cared for, and never have to struggle alone again. Jena and Molly will always have that here.
